Alwar
Situated 116 km from Bharatpur, is the gateway to the royalties of Rajasthan. Many tourist attractions reflecting its the glorious Rajput history can be seen all around the city. The main attraction include the Bala Quila, the City Palace complex with a lake beside it, a government museum and the mausoleum of Tarang Sultan.
Barsana
(50 km from Mathura), birthplace of Radha (the consort of Lord Krishna), is a very special place for the Hindus. During Holi, the festial of colours, women of the village attack men from Nandgaon (Krishna//’s village) with wooden sticks for their efforts to put colour on them. The main attractions include Larily Lal Temple, Mor Kutir, and Sankari Kor.
Deeg
32 km north-west of Bharatpur towards Alwar, Deeg was the summer resort and second capital of the state of Bharatpur. Built as a holiday resort of Jat rulers of Bharatpur, fort at Deej is made with twelve bastions. Lakha Burj,the largest of the lot still has a cannon mounted to it. The brilliant sense of balance in the layout of the palaces and gardens is remarkable. The building forms a large rectangular enclosure for the garden and two large tanks on the eastern and western side. The impressive structure is Gopal Bhawan make the the air in the room cool and refreshing even on a hot and humid day in summers. The most striking part of the garden complex is Keshav Bhawan, the summer pavilion which on special occasions has the 500 fountains spouting colouredwater while fireworks lit the sky. Some of these still play during local festivals.
Mahaban
Mahaban (approximately 35 km), part of Brajbhoomi (land of the braj), is where Lord Krishna spend youth. The Palace of Nanda, Krishna’s foster-father, having the legendary cradle of lord Krishna is a major attraction here.
Nandgaon
Situated 56 km from Mathura, Nandgaon is where Lord Krishna spent his childhood. Built by a Jat ruler Roop Singh, a temple dedicated to Nand Rai at the top the hill, is a major attraction of Nandgaon. . The other temples include Narsingha, Gopinath, Girdhari, Nritya Gopal, Nand Nandan, and Yasodha Nandan. Nandgaon also has a glorious tradition of Holi. Day before the Holi, women of Barsana pay a ritiualistic visit to Nandgaon and challenge the men of the village to play Holi with them. The next day the men go to Barsana where the famous Lathmar Holi takes place.
